The "'''speaks'''" flag denotes monsters with the ability to communicate. Only intelligent monsters can talk, and they may do so under certain circumstances:

*When first sighting a character
*During prolonged combat, at certain intervals
*When using a spell or a special ability
*When confused (mostly to utter gibberish!)

Most [[unique monster]]s can speak, including [[Gastronok]], a giant slug who ate a wizard and became intelligent!
